What we build
Three areas of practice
We build Windows desktop software for Canadian hydrometric and climate records, geotechnical instrumentation, and hydrological modelling.
Each tool covers one job end to end: getting the data in, working with it, and getting a defensible output back out.
HydroCAN works with Water Survey of Canada and ECCC records through GeoMet and the HYDAT archive. GIA imports inclinometer readings. Raven's Nest sets up Raven model inputs.
Where the tools come from
Scripts that other people can use
Old, awkward, or tedious tools still sit at the centre of a lot of this work. What started as scripts to get jobs done more consistently turned into desktop software other people can use.
The tools come out of hydrometric data work, geotechnical instrumentation, and hydrological modelling. We only build for work we have done, which is why the catalogue is small and stays that way.
Approach
How we decide what to build
Start from real project work
We only build tools for jobs we've done ourselves. If we haven't done the work, we don't ship a product for it.
HydroCAN is the shipped result of that work: Water Survey of Canada and ECCC station records in one desktop workflow.
Don't bury the method
A polished interface is useful, but it shouldn't hide what is happening behind the scenes. Inputs, assumptions, calculations, and outputs should make sense to the person using them.
HydroCAN exports carry source, units, quality flags, and provisional status, plus a JSON sidecar with source, checksum, and app version.
Stay focused
We keep scope tight and the actual task in view. The goal is software that does one job well—not a pile of half-finished features or an ever-expanding platform.

- HydroCAN is free to use, with no account. GIA is commercial and still in development. Raven's Nest is free and still in development.
- Your data
- HydroCAN does not require an account and does not send telemetry. The first launch needs an internet connection, and map tiles are not available offline.
- Requirements
- HydroCAN’s current release runs on Windows 10/11 x64.
